Truth in advertising when anything can be generated

Advertising has always involved a little magic: the perfect light, the best angle, the happiest family. But there has always been a line between flattering a product and lying about it. A burger can look its best; it cannot be twice the size it is served. A phone can be shown beautifully; its camera cannot be credited with photos it did not take.
AI makes crossing that line effortless. A product can be generated larger, shinier, more effective. Results can be invented. Customers can be created. The line is still there. Only the temptation has grown.
Where AI ads go wrong
- Products that do not match reality: a generated dress in a colour you do not stock, a meal larger than the portion
- Invented results: before-and-after images, performance demonstrations or outcomes that never happened
- Fake people: generated "customers" giving testimonials, generated "doctors" recommending products
- Fabricated statistics: AI-written copy that includes numbers nobody measured
- Implied endorsements: generated scenes that suggest a celebrity, institution or official approves
Why the rules still apply
Consumer protection and advertising standards apply to what an ad says and shows, however it was made. In Kenya, laws on consumer protection and fair competition, along with sector rules for areas such as health, finance and alcohol, still govern what businesses may claim. "The AI made it" is not a defence.
An honest AI ad checklist
- Does the product on screen match what the customer will receive? Build from real photos of your product where you can.
- Is every claim true and provable? Prices, features, results, comparisons.
- Are any people presented as real customers, experts or staff? If so, are they real, and did they consent?
- Are results realistic and typical? If not, do not show them.
- Are numbers sourced? Remove any statistic you cannot back up.
- Would a reasonable viewer be misled about anything that matters? If yes, change it or label it. When to label AI content.
How Tari Studio helps you stay honest
Tari Studio is built to make honesty easier:
- Attach your real product photos and the Studio builds from them. Attachments
- Scripts are editable drafts: check every word before you make the video. Scripts
- Your exact words are kept: brand names, prices and phone numbers stay as typed
- Prompt we sent shows exactly what each model was asked to make
- Nothing publishes itself: Autopilot waits for your approval
The long game
Customers who are fooled once become sceptics forever, and they tell others. Customers who get what the ad promised come back. In a world where anything can be generated, the businesses that stay honest will be the ones people believe.
