Kitenge on camera: fashion drops for African designers
Chrisphine Otieno · 19 Oct 2026 · 2 min read
African fashion has rarely been more visible. Designers in Nairobi, Lagos, Accra, Dakar and Johannesburg sell kitenge, Ankara, kente and contemporary streetwear to buyers at home and in the diaspora, mostly through Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp. A new collection, a "drop", can sell out in a day, or vanish without a trace.
The difference is often the launch content. Fashion is movement: how a fabric falls, how a cut fits, how a print catches the light. Static photos show some of it. Video shows all of it.
What a drop needs
A collection launch usually has three phases:
- The tease: close-ups of fabric and detail, the date, nothing else
- The reveal: the pieces in motion, on bodies that look like your customers
- The sell: each piece with its price, sizes and how to order
Each phase is a few short vertical clips.
Show the clothes as they are
Fashion buyers punish disappointment. The colour, the cut and the fit on screen must match what arrives. With Tari Studio, attach photos of your actual pieces and the Studio builds the video from them, keeping the garment you made in view. You see the length, shape and credit cost on a quote first, and nothing is charged until you press Generate. How attachments work.
The Studio's AK2 model was built for exactly this kind of content: bold colour, confident people in modern African fashion with kitenge and Ankara accents, dynamic camera moves and music-led pacing. Read about AK1 and AK2.
Keep your muse consistent
Many designers have a signature look or a recurring model in their campaigns. In the Studio, a character with a clear description and up to six pictures keeps that person consistent across every clip. Only use a real model's likeness with their permission, and never imitate a real person. Characters.
Bodies and skin, celebrated
African fashion is for African bodies in all their range: tall, short, curvy, slim, every skin tone. Write that range into your descriptions. Audiences notice when a brand shows only one type of body, and they notice when a brand shows them.
Price and sizes, clearly
For the "sell" phase, image ads work well: one piece per poster, with price, sizes and how to order. For clear, correctly spelled lettering, pick Ideogram 4 (clear text) on the quote. Check every price.
Sell in the chat
Most African fashion sales close in DMs and WhatsApp. Add a tracked WhatsApp link to every launch post, so each conversation arrives tagged with the post that brought it, and use automations to answer the sizing and delivery questions you will get hundreds of times. WhatsApp and leads.
Reach the diaspora
Diaspora buyers love African design and will pay for it, but they worry about sizing, shipping and payment. A short clip that answers all three, with an international payment option, opens that market.
