Explaining insurance in 20 seconds: video for Africa's under-insured

Insurance penetration in most African countries remains low by global standards. The usual explanations are price and income, and both matter. But anyone who has tried to sell a policy in Nairobi, Kampala or Accra will add a third: people do not understand what they are buying, and many do not trust that the money will come when it is needed.

Insurance is a strange product. You pay now for something you hope never to use. It cannot be touched, tasted or tried. The only way to see it is through a story.

Stories, not features

A list of benefits ("hospital cover up to X, outpatient limit Y") leaves most people cold. A twenty-second story does not:

  • A boda rider's bike is stolen, and the policy replaces it so he is back at work in a week.
  • A mama mboga's stall burns in a market fire, and stock cover lets her restock.
  • A family's breadwinner falls ill, and the hospital bill is paid directly.

Each story shows the moment insurance becomes real.

Making those stories

With Tari Studio, a marketing team or a single agent can type /script with the length and the story, and the AI director writes timed scenes with spoken lines and on-screen words. Every policy detail mentioned must match the real product exactly, and your compliance team should approve the script before the video is made. Scripts are free. Scripts with /script.

The AK1 model's grounded, documentary feel suits these stories: real streets, real homes, real people. Under Look and feel on the quote, set the language to Kiswahili, Kenyan English or a blend of the two.

Explain the claim, not just the sale

The fear behind most hesitation is "they will not pay". The most persuasive video an insurer can make shows the claims process: what to do, which documents, how long it takes, how the money arrives. If your claims are genuinely fast, show it.

Never overpromise

Insurance is regulated, and for good reason. A video must not suggest cover the policy does not provide. Avoid words like "everything is covered" or "guaranteed payout". Show exclusions honestly where they matter. Use real customer stories only with written consent, and never present an illustrated scenario as a real claim.

Agents are your channel

In much of Africa, insurance is sold person to person. Give agents short, approved clips they can share on WhatsApp Status and in groups, with their own name and number at the end. A branded template in the Studio makes one version per agent quick. Templates.

Meet people at life's moments

People think about insurance at specific moments: a new baby, a new car, a new business, a new job, a hospital visit. Make a clip for each moment and publish it where those people are. A tracked WhatsApp link on each post shows which story brought each enquiry. WhatsApp and leads.

Make the price clear

If your premium can be paid weekly or monthly by M-Pesa, say so. Affordability is often about the size of each payment, not the total.

Write your first insurance story.
