Marathon country: how running events and sports brands can tell better stories

Few countries are as closely associated with a sport as Kenya is with distance running. The champions from Iten, Kaptagat and the Rift Valley have made Kenyan running a global brand. At home, road races, fun runs, charity marathons and corporate runs now fill weekends across the country, and running clubs meet before dawn in every major town.

That creates a market: race organisers selling entries, clubs recruiting members, sponsors seeking visibility, and sports brands selling shoes, kit and nutrition. Most of them under-use the stories they already have.

The stories running offers

  • The early morning: a club running through mist in the highlands at 5:30 a.m.
  • The first-timer: someone training for their first 10K
  • The cause: a charity run raising money for a school, a hospital or a conservancy
  • The community: families, children's races, the crowd at the finish
  • The champions: the heritage that inspires everyone else

Making race content

A race needs content before (registration), during (updates) and after (results and thanks). With Tari Studio, an organiser can describe a scene, attach photos from previous editions or the route, and get a short video back. A quote shows the length, shape and credits first. How attachments work.

The AK1 model's documentary realism suits running: real roads, real light, real effort. AK2's bolder, music-led style suits a sponsor activation or a launch.

Champions' likenesses are theirs

Kenya's great athletes are global figures, and their names and faces have commercial value. Do not use them, or generate anything resembling them, without a proper agreement. Celebrate the heritage of Kenyan running without implying an endorsement you do not have.

Make registering easy

The commonest reason people do not enter a race is friction: they did not know how to register, or forgot. Every pre-race clip should end with how to register and the deadline. For posters with dates, distances and fees, pick Ideogram 4 (clear text) and check every detail.

Sponsors want proof

Race sponsors increasingly ask what they got for their money. Short clips featuring the sponsor's branding, with the number of views and engagements, give organisers something to show. Tracked links show how many people acted on each post.

Brands: build on community

Sports brands in Africa do best when they invest in the running community: club kits, pacers, water stations, training plans. Video that shows that investment honestly earns more loyalty than a glossy ad.

Safety and inclusion

Show proper hydration, marshals and medical support. Show runners of every age, ability and body. Running is for everyone, and the most popular races are the ones that make everyone feel welcome.

After the race

The race does not end at the finish line. Within a day, post the results, real photos (with consent from identifiable runners) and a thank-you clip for volunteers, marshals and sponsors. Announce the date of next year's edition while the excitement is fresh. Local businesses along the route, the cafés, pharmacies and kiosks that served runners, can be tagged and thanked too; they become partners for the next edition.

Make your race's first clip.
