Made in Kenya: how local manufacturers can compete with imports on screen
Chrisphine Otieno · 19 Oct 2026 · 2 min read
Walk down a supermarket aisle in Nairobi and you will find Kenyan-made soaps, juices, cooking oils, biscuits, paints and plastics sitting beside imported brands. Many local products are as good or better. Yet imported brands often win attention because they arrive with polished advertising made for global markets.
Kenyan manufacturers rarely have the same advertising budgets. What they have is something imports cannot claim: a story rooted here.
The made-in-Kenya story
Consumers increasingly care where products come from, for reasons of pride, jobs and quality. A manufacturer can show:
- The factory: clean lines, quality checks, skilled workers
- The people: the engineers, packers and drivers who are Kenyans earning a living
- The ingredients or materials: sourced from Kenyan farms and suppliers where true
- The standards: certifications and testing, proven, not claimed
- The product in Kenyan life: in homes, shops and kitchens customers recognise
Make campaign-quality content affordably
With Tari Studio, a manufacturer's marketing team can describe a scene, attach photos of the real factory and products, and get a short video back, with the length, shape and credits shown on a quote first. Building from your own photos keeps the factory and packaging on screen accurate. How attachments work.
The AK1 model suits factory and origin content; AK2's bold, music-led style suits a consumer launch or a promotion.
One brand, consistent everywhere
Set up each product brand in the Studio with its colours, tone of voice, audience and the things its ads must always and never do. The AI director uses those details on every request, and over time the Studio keeps notes on what works for each brand from your feedback. Brands and brand memory.
Packaging text must be right
Product names, ingredients, weights and prices on screen must match the real packaging. AI image models have historically struggled with text; for packshots and posters, pick Ideogram 4 (clear text) and check every word. Getting packaging text right in AI ads.
Claims and standards
Claims like "natural", "no preservatives", "KEBS approved" or "export quality" must be true and provable. Consumers and competitors check, and regulators act on false claims.
Reach both ends of the chain
Manufacturers sell to consumers and to trade buyers: distributors, wholesalers, supermarkets, institutions. Each needs different content. Consumers want the product in their lives; trade buyers want margins, reliability and promotional support. Trade marketing videos that move stock.
Pride sells, carefully
"Made in Kenya" works best alongside quality. Patriotism alone does not make a customer buy a second time; a good product does. Tell the story, then let the product prove it.
Export-ready content
For buyers outside Kenya, the questions shift: certifications, production capacity, packaging for export, lead times and how to order samples. A short factory film in English (international) or French, set on the Studio's quote, with these answers on screen, can open conversations with buyers across the region and beyond. Have a native speaker check every word, and make sure every certification you mention is current.
